Can't keep up!

I just can't keep up with mothin', work and blogging at the moment. So unfortunately my records, lists and posts are well behind. So I thought I'd leave a sneak preview of what's to come. I had a bumper weekend, so expect a bit more soon, time permitting............

Cream-bordered Green Pea
After losing one last year it was nice to score the 'money shot' this year. A great moth in perfect condition. 25th June.

The Garden 17-18/06

It's just about been ticking over for the last couple of days, even though the temperatures have been on the cold side. Here's a few new one for the year.

 Smoky Wainscot

Confirmation...........

........And it looks like the hunch turned out to be correct. Luckily I had 2 Double Square-spots to compare it to, otherwise it could of easily been overlooked. It was collected by the recorders on 16th and a gen. det. confirmed it as a male Triple-spotted Clay. It is the 1st one in VC30 this year and is also a 1st for the garden.
Double Square-spot                              Triple-spotted Clay
The wing shape was the noticeable key feature as the colour and the hind wing were almost identical to the Double Square-spot.

14-15-16/06

Well, for a start the less said about the 16th the better as it was terrible. The cold and blustery conditions kept the traps contents down to 26 of 11 species, in mid June! Luckily the 2 nights previous were pretty good......

871a Oegoconia caradjai?
Without a gen. det. its difficult to tell the 3 similar species apart. But 871a seems to be the most likely candidate. Caught 15th June.

 1452 Phycita roborella
1st of the Year 15th June

 Vapourer
1st of the year, 15th June.

 Small Fan-foot
Surprisingly, a Garden 1st on 15th June. Swept from the hedge during the day.

 Dun-bar
The only new addition for 14th June.

 V-pug
1st of the year, 15th June.

 Least Carpet
Bit of an odd pose, but a very well marked specimen. 15th June.

Triple-spotted Clay ??
After already finding loads of Double Square-spot, this looked slightly different. Although a bit battered, it still has the narrow, sleeker look of Triple-spotted Clay. It has been retained for inspection by VC30 recorders, so fingers crossed.

Hatch Plantation 11-06

We decided to drop in at Hatch Poplar Plantation as there had been reports earlier in the day of Hornet Moths on some of the tree trunks. Unfortunately I think we were too late, as we couldn't find any. Early morning is probably the best time and you can expect to find them between 2 and 3 feet up from the ground on the bare trunks. I did bring a sweep net just in case there was anything else interesting.........And there was.
1167 Gypsonoma aceriana
Only the 5th county record (VC30). The last time it was caught was 2001.

 Clouded Border
These were absolutely everywhere, we counted at least 10.

The Lodge- 09-06

This was the 1st coordinated moth trapping outing RSPB's The Lodge has ever had. 10 traps located at strategic points around the reserve, manned by different trappers. Contact was kept by phone and any interesting species were texted and made available for viewing and photos etc.
Steve Blain gave out the locations and myself and Trent got the Old Heath. We set up an 80w MV bulkhead light on a tripod and an Actinic Skinner in nearby mixed woodland. We are still waiting on 7 micros which have been sent to the recorder for further analysis, so a full list will appear soon.......

799 Neofriseria singula
Our 'plum' location really paid off; this is an RDB species and is probably a 1st for VC30, the one and only other record is from 1904! 2 of these landed on the veritcal sheet and were quickly potted up!

 1442 Pempelia palumbella
This heather specialist is a 2nd for VC30 after Col Campbell caught the 1st just last week in the same location!

 Bird's Wing
2 caught on the night.

 Shoulder-striped Wainscot
Just 1 caught in the Actinic Skinner.

 True Lover's Knot
A target species- no need to worry as we caught 6.

 Pale Oak Beauty
Just 1 on the vertical sheet.

Ruddy Carpet!

Yes, everyone likes it when they get a new carpet! And what a stunner- not too many records in Bedfordshire either for this Nb species...... Apart from this, not too much to talk about as the trap was relatively empty. Not even a Large Nutmeg, which is a good thing I suppose.

............06/06

Another lot of NFY species in a surprisingly good night. Though the odd patrol of the 2 traps certainly helped as 5 out of 6 debutant's were micros. I often miss these as they are usually long gone by morning.

A bit strange this, and it certainly fooled me into thinking I had a new species.

Wet weather during the night, so just 1 Actinic/UV trap out under the overhanging shed roof. There is enough room to allow the trap to be outside but avoid getting a good soaking- unless there is a strong easterly wind.

While the cat's away.....04/06

This morning I had to get away early to do some Beds Bird Atlas work in the North of the county. So in my haste, I left the kids in charge of recording numbers and retaining interesting species............And despite the kids being the tender ages of 7 and 6, they coped quite well. Even adding 2 more Macro species to the garden list! By the time I got back the fridge was full of over 20 pots of unidentified moths- a really good effort.

................02-03/06

We are really in full flow now with new species coming thick and fast. A few photos and a list of the catch for 3rd June at the bottom of this post. Also we managed to armchair tick a Rufous Minor amongst 4 Marbled Minor agg.s for the Home Wood list......

Scorched Wing
NFG, 2nd June.

 Treble Brown-spot
NFY 2nd June.

1020-24 Grey Tortrix sp. Cnephasia sp.

I can't remember seeing a brown Uncertain/Rustic agg. type moth before. Answers on a post card.....

 905 Blastodacna hellerella

1033 Green Oak Tortrix Tortrix viridana
NFY, 3rd June.

 1328 Schoenobius gigantella
This is an Nb species not seen in Bedfordshire for 4 years. After looking at various images- I don't think it could be anything else. It's a probable female and is a massive 30mm long, a macro Micro!
