Well what a stonker! Conditions were perfect so I put out 2 traps. My trusty 2x 15w Skinner at the top of the garden and after an hour trying out an 80w MV, switched to the 2x 25w FUL Actinic at the bottom of the garden. One of the best nights of the year so far............

The Autumn Almanac........27/09

Yes, yes, yes It's my Autumn Almanac! A great night and a sign that the season has well and truly started. Temperatures stayed no lower than 13°C and there was heavy cloud cover and the lightest of breezes. I've taken a few snaps but missed out on a pristine Red-green Carpet, only the 2nd record for the garden. There is a full count at the bottom of this post.

Well it's one of them.......It's another of these Grey Spruce Carpets! If I was a betting man, I would be leaning towards Spruce........

1st time the trap has been out in 4 days. Unfortunately not too much about.......

Cockchafer Common Swift Grey Pine Carpet

I haven't seen a Cockchafer in years- are they getting rarer? This one was found under the egg boxes along with my 1st ever garden Common Swift. On the outside of the trap was a Grey Pine Carpet and another garden debutant; a White-spotted Pug. Also for the 1st time this year there was a fleeting visit from a Sallow Kitten. The count;

Spruce & Grey Pine- the final solution?

The top image looks to be a Grey Pine Carpet, the wing is generally plainer towards the outer edge and the central band is much narrower. This gives the 3 segments on each wing a much rounder look.

This is a Spruce Carpet (trapped on 09/10), the central band is much broader giving the segments a triangular look. The rear of the wing is clearly marked with an extra band just inside the outer edge and is more striking in appearance.............I think?

Knowing your Spruce from your Pine.....06/10

No, not trees but Carpet Moths! This latest Carpet species (top) turned up to throw doubt in to my mind about my passed identifications of other such Moths. This along with 2 other photos (that I thought were Spruce Carpet) go back into the 'mystery' folder.
