Late September Rush!

A few decent macros as the 'Indian Summer' continues. In fact, all of this week looks like a good chance to fill in the gaps. Disappointingly, I haven't seen too much evidence of any migrants, just a couple of Diamond-back Moths is all. 

Unfortunately, the Pinion-streaked Snout has disappeared and I have now given up after 2 days of 'lamping'.  It must of either escaped or died in the house somewhere. 

On Thursday (30th) there is a planned trip into Home Wood for some Autumnal Moths to add to the successful leaf-mining trip conducted during the day by David Manning and Trent Duval on 26th. They recorded 27 new species for the survey.

This was caught on 9th October and I've given up deciding what it is. It seems long passed it's flight season.

The recent cold snap seems to have finally kick started the arrival of some seasonal moths. The dreaded Turnip Moth seems to be in steep decline now and is being replaced by a sharp increase in Lunar Underwing numbers. Still no Sallows, but they may start turning up before the week's end. The weather is by no means ideal though with a fairly strong, gusting wind last night.

Slowly ticking 'em off with another species for the year, though I haven't had a totally new garden tick since the Frosted Orange on 11th. The weather continues to be changeable and surprisingly, other than the earlier Centre-barred, no sign of any other Sallow species as yet...........

I thinks this is a Dark Chestnut? see above post for the rest of the haul.

Thanks to Melissa this has been confirmed as a very dark Beaded Chestnut! All the others I have had so far have been, well......Chestnut.

A decent haul...............24/09/2009

An interesting evening. Quantity was down but quality up, with 2 more new for the trap. The Large Wainscot (above) is usually an inhabitant or reed beds or marshes. I think I owe this new one to Broom GPs just 1/2 mile away. Centre right is the Beaded Chestnut, found in the trap among many very similar Lunar Underwing. Although not new, it is the 1st photo I have managed to get. Bottom right is the rare immigrant Dark Sword-grass found for the 1st time under the egg boxes- very unexpected, another great find! I have now been trapping for just under 3 months and have recorded over 80 species of macro moth. Not bad for a village back garden! Also-
