Home Wood 26/07

Once again I left a small  80w MV Skinner in the wood overnight. In the morning myself and Trent went to pick it up with the cheapo Chinese generator still going strong at 6.30am. For just £60, it has proved to be cheap to run and very reliable, if a little on the noisy/smoky side!
A lot of the micros are currently with David Manning for Gen Dets, mainly Coleophora and Cnephasia sp.
I also have what looks like a Triple-spotted Clay and a very worn pug for Andy Banthorpe.

Black Arches
 Very common in Home Wood.

196 Morophaga choragella
This is the Cork Moth's big brother- with a whopping 25mm wingspan.

 Burnished Brass

Nearer....................

............to the elusive 100 species up in one night. As has been commented before, I would probably do better with some more powerful traps and being slightly less apathetic when confronted by huge amounts of moths to process. I may well of missed the boat this year though.............

300..............and counting

....................and the 300 target falls, with an incredible run of six new garden moths in just three days..........and here they are-

True Lover's Knot
Totally out of context, the nearest heathland is a small area in the grounds of the RSPB's headquarters over four miles away. NFG 23rd July

 Rosy Footman
Found stuck to my plastic picnic table in the morning dew, hence the lack of colour. NFG 24th July

 Wormwood
The star of the show and only the 18th VC30 record. NFG 24th July.

 Southern Wainscot
Two caught, NFG 24th July.

 Blackneck
A long-awaited Garden first, 24th July.

 Lunar-spotted Pinion
Caught in the gazebo under my twin 40w BLB rig, this completes the set of all three Spotted Pinion species, NFG 25th July.

Broom GPs, 21-07

An early afternoon visit to Broom with the kid produced some decent photo opportunities. We were out for well over an hour and it didn't rain! The next few days look as though we have finally left winter behind us..........just in time for Autumn. I collected a couple of micros that need to be investigated further.

Six-spot Burnet

Louie found two of these feeding in Trefoil flowers. It's the first time I've seen them at this site.

 Marbled White
One of at least ten, found between the lakes in the meadow area. They seemed to prefer the flowers of Marsh Thistle.

 Meadow Brown

 Small Skipper
Really nice to see so many butterflies. Though I have noticed a distinct lack of both Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell.

Marbled Beauty
Back home in the garden, the only new moth for the year was this; found by the kids in the front garden.

19-07

After a night off on 18th, a decent but colder night on 19th. Four new species for the year- including the rare Schoenobius gigantella. This time a male and only my second record. The others were Cabbage Moth, July Highflyer and Orthopygia glaucinalis.

Small Rivulet

Second record for 2012.

 1328 Schoenobius gigantella

The Score 17-07

It was the first warm night in a long time with the temperature at 10.00pm hovering around 18°C. Earlier in the evening I put out three traps in strategic positions around the garden. Not wishing to miss anything I did a few early patrols (Trent style) up until around 11.30pm.
I very rarely patrol at this time of year, as it is usually quite late before anything turns up. But this turned out to be an exceptional night with sizeable amounts turning up shortly after dark. Twenty new moths for the year (10 macro, 10 micro) and in that, four were new for the garden! It's been a long time since that's happened, I'm lucky to get one nowadays.
I ended up with a record breaking 294 of 88 species..........however, I won't be attempting this too often as it takes absolutely ages to process!
