Year Review 2022

In 2022, I recorded 551 garden species, beating last year's record-breaking total by five, something I didn't think would be achievable. There were 292 Macros (the same as 2021) and 259 Micros, the most I've ever recorded! As always, a big thanks to Andy and Melissa Banthorpe for their continued hard work with VC30 moths, especially for all the Gen dets.

Recording days/Trap nights: 226 (+4 on 2021)

Records: 5795 (-608 on 2021)

The year ended with an all time garden total of 876 species. (411 Macro, 465 Micro)

The table below shows the most productive month for species caught was July. By far the least was January. There were just six blank nights recorded, two in January and February and one in November and December. The most trap nights/recording days were in July and October.

Micros

The use of pheromone lures in tree hanging traps has added to the species list. This, coupled with a better understanding of leaf mine identification has certainly helped. The planting of a small section of mixed hedge has given the garden a few more tree species; Elm, Cherry, Blackthorn and Viburnum will add diversity to the garden.

Eight were added this year, though the majority through purchasing more pheromones, allowing me to catch most of the more common clearwings. Sallow Clearwing was the exception as it had only been added to the county list recently.
